TecnoRevolución

©Jordi Nieva
In recent years we have experienced a revolution in the progress made in science and technology. This is a result of the convergence of various technology disciplines which previously worked independently. These are nanotechnology, biotechnology, information and communication technology and cognitive sciences (NBIC). Their convergence is causing an authentic revolution in such different fields as construction, transport, agriculture, medicine, education and art. To give us an idea of how far this revolution can go, CosmoCaixa present the exhibition “Tecnorrevolución”, an interactive display that presents converging technologies and their uses and possibilities.

During his world tour, which starts off in Seville on 13th May, Springsteen presents, together with the E Street Band, his latest album “Wrecking Bull”, which is the seventeenth of his career. Tracks with the purest rock’n’roll essence, catchy tunes and topical subjects, as the album is mixed with tough, compromising lyrics referring to the current economic crisis, with which The Boss will once again undoubtedly put Barcelona under his spell. Tickets for both concerts sold out in just a few hours.

Campionat del Món de la Classe 470

Barcelona will be hosting the 470 Class World Championship from 10th to 19th May. Three hundred sailors will be taking part with 150 boats from 20 countries, accompanied by 100 trainers and support crews. The event has been organised by the Catalan and Spanish Sailing Federations, the International 470 Class Association, the Reial Club Marítim Barcelona, the Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona and Barcelona Municipal Council. This will be the most important championship held along the Barcelona coastline in 2012. This year’s race will also be a qualifying round for many countries that will decide which of their teams classify for the London Olympics.
In addition to the interest it arouses as a top-level competition, the World Championship will promote the benefits of the sport of sailing among the community. It is important to remember that Barcelona has had close ties to the sea through its history and to the world of sailing in particular as a result of initiatives dating from the late 19th century, when the city’s two sailing clubs, the Reial Club Marítim Barcelona and the Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona were founded.
The World Championship will be the linking thread that will bring sailing to a wider audience and show the basic aspects of 470 Class dinghy sailing. Barcelona will also have the opportunity to put the city and sailing back in the spotlight by making the urban waterfront Parc del Fòrum one of the focal points of the competition, showing that they have both been inextricably linked throughout its recent history.
The World Championship will also involve the community as it will be organising a wide range of activities that will make it easier to understand and practise this sport. On the first day of the championship, Saturday 12th May, at 12 noon, an exhibition regatta will be held in the Port Vell, with two yachtsmen and women from each of the participating countries. A speaker will explain the characteristics of the regatta making it more accessible and fun. The aim is to celebrate this competition by bringing sailing to young and old alike.

Martin Parr. Photography and collections

The mix between photography and collections is the core of this exhibition of works by Martin Parr. To illustrate this, tourist experience has been chosen as the scenario to reunite modern life. Thus a dialogue is established between two realities (photography and collections) for visitors to decipher the motive, means and objectives of the artistic intervention.

Grupo Corpo

El Grupo Corpo have become the most important dance company in Brazil as a result of their master combination of classic technique with the contemporary re-performance of traditional dance from Brazil, led by the choreographer and director Rodrigo Pederneiras. This is the first time they have come to the Liceu, where they are performing two of their most successful choreographies which were first shown in the nineties in Lyon: “Bach” and “Parabelo”. In both of these pieces, music reinforces this inspiring combination of classicism with Brazilian tradition, and the movements are physical, expressive, mature and occasionally explosive.

Puss in Boots –Xavier Montsalvatge

Foto: Antoni Bofill
The Gran Teatre del Liceu joins in the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of the composer Xavier Montsalvatge and programmes one of his most famous operas, “Puss in Boots”. He composed this opera in his youth, and although it was written for a young audience. Montsalvatge did not give it a naive approach, but enabled it to show all his wisdom and musical refinement. The result is a beautiful and harmonious score, with a touch of subtle irony.

Camille - Ilo Veyou

The French pop singer, Camille, has her own imaginative, surprising and experimental style. Her music becomes a play on melodies, rhythms and loops above which her very special voice stands out. Her new album “IloVeyou” was recorded in ancient chapels with a cord, wind instrument and double bass quartet, achieving a very special sound as a result of the reverberation of the stone walls. Perhaps this is why her album is this time more acoustic, melodic and restful, enabling us to enjoy the countless tones of her voice.

Rita McBride. Oferta pública / Public Tender

Alexander Hick / Rita McBride. “Day afterday”, 2011.
Standardization as a result of mass production, the value of space and the significance of materials are some of the aspects questioned by Rita McBride in her work. Thus we can see in her sculptures a car made of raffia, marble piping or rubber plant leaves inside Murano glass. In this way, the American artist analyses space and the relationship of objects with modern architecture and industrial design. In her work, the limits between sculpture and architecture appear to wear away, as can be seen in her recent public exhibitions.

Eli Paperboy Reed meets The Pepper Pots

The 23rd edition of the Festival de Guitarra of Barcelona gives us an opportunity to enjoy a unique combination. On 24th May, a collaboration which seemed to be predestined will be performing. On the one hand the hoarse voice of the king of soul revival, Eli Paperboy Reed, and on the other the guardians of Motown, The Pepper Pots from Girona join together to offer a performance, with a taste of classic but with a cutting edge in which dance soul is the leading player.

In “Tribute to 12 Catalan poets”, we can go through the chronological order of their lives, their way of living poetry and the titles of their books, and also view documents and publications of their works. These poets are Maria Antònia Salvà, Clementina Arderiu, Simona Gay, Rosa Leveroni, Montserrat Abelló, Felicia Fuster, Maria Beneyto, Maria Àngels Anglada, Quima Jaume, Olga Xirinacs, Marta Pessarrodona and Maria Mercè Marçal. This exhibition is organized by the Gender Study Group: translation, literature, history and communication of the University of Vic (GETLIHC), with the support of the Catalan Institute of Women and the UNESCO Chair.
Hierro, the hidden eruption

Source: Instituto Geográfico Nacional
In 2011 in the island of Hierro in the Canaries, a submarine eruption occurred caused by a submerged volcano. Spectacular images were taken and it created scientific interest for the activity of the volcanic cone located at a depth of 88 metres and just 5 kilometres from the coast. Now, with the exhibition “Hierro, the hidden eruption” at the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona, visitors will have the opportunity of becoming a volcanologist for a day. Through different panels, the exhibition recreates the whole interpretation of the event: how the eruption was forecast, the details of the follow-up and the main features and effects.
